چکیده

The demand for high-bandwidth media streaming over the Internet is growing. For large groups of receivers, media streaming places a heavy burden on the network. IP Multicast can alleviate this problem, but it is not widely deployed. In recent years, application layer multicast and overlay multicast have been proposed as alternatives. However, there are still concerns about the efficiency, scalability and deployment of these architectures. In this thesis, a novel application layer multicast approach, called the Dynamic Meshbased Overlay Multicast Protocol (DMMP), is evaluated. DMMP establishes an overlay network core consisting of super nodes, which are end-hosts with particularly high capacities. Each super node manages a cluster of non-super nodes. We use network simulations to analyze the performance of DMMP. For that purpose, we have implemented a DMMPmodule in OverSim. OverSim is an overlay network simulation framework based on OMNeT++. We compare DMMP with NICE, a well-known application layer multicast protocol, that is claimed to achieve low link stress and low control overhead. We experiment with groups of up to 2048 members. Our results indicate that DMMP can achieve comparable service quality with less control overhead, and that DMMP has the potential to scale to a high number of receivers.

Overlay Multicast for Real - Time Distributed Simulation

OVERLAY MULTICAST FOR REAL-TIME DISTRIBUTED SIMULATION This report provides a top-level architecture for an overlay multicast service in support of distributed real-time virtual simulations over an open network environment. The top-level architecture for the overlay protocol was developed based on key concepts identified in the laboratory performance studies, the analytical model, and the studi...

VRing: A Ring-based Application-Layer Multicast Protocol

This paper presents the design, analysis and performance evaluation of VRing, a novel application-layer multicast (ALM) protocol that establishes a virtual ring as an overlay network among the multicast group members in a selforganizing and distributed manner. VRing takes advantage of the inherent desirable property of a ring; namely, the degree of each node on the ring is O(1) (i.e., independe...

Performance Evaluation of Reliable Overlay Multicast in Wireless Sensor Networks

Using multicast communication in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is an efficient way to disseminate code updates to multiple sensor nodes. For this purpose a multicast protocol has to support bulky traffic (typical traffic pattern for code updates) and end-to-end reliability. In addition, we are interested in energy-efficient operations due to the limited resources of WSNs. Currently no data di...

Performance Evaluation of the XMSF Overlay Multicast Prototype

Growing demand for use of Internet/Web-based services in large scale real-time distributed virtual simulation (RT-DVS) and other real-time applications is fueling extensive interest in overlay multicast protocols. These applications require many-to-many multicast services that are not available as an open Internet service today and are not likely to be offered as an Internet-wide service in the...

Orta - an Overlay for Real Time Applications

This paper presents Orta, a new peer-to-peer network overlay protocol intended for use with interactive realtime conferencing applications. The implementation is presented as a reusable software library, that is not tied to any existing application. One application, the UCL Robust-Audio Tool, is modified to use this library rather than IP multicast as a proofof-concept implementation. We presen...
